Shae Salmon is best known for combining her life long passion for photography with mixed media painting. Starting with a base of textural layers and translucent colours, her acrylic paints create abstract impressions of the natural landscape - sea, sky, and forest. Atop these backgrounds, she transfers her photographic images of birds & trees.
In the encounter between these distinct mediums, Shae's pieces mark a fresh approach to landscape portraiture. Her canvases evoke a West Coast contemporary sensibility, which is merged with a more classical rendering of wildlife. This combination of techniques reframes the way we imagine scenery, playing with our expectations. Reflecting on the freedom of birds in flight, she says she loves "the idea of removing birds from the everyday and placing them in the beautiful, abstract backgrounds I create for them." It's this unusual revision of nature that makes Shae's artwork such a unique combination of worlds - not just of living things and their habitat, but of photography and paint.
Originally from Saskatchewan, Shae started her artistic career by completing a BFA in Film Production from the University of Regina. She moved to BC and has worked in the local film industry for over twenty years. As a VFX Editor and Mixed Media Artist, she has continued her studies in photography, design, colour theory, mixed media techniques and painting through BCIT, Capilano University and local workshops.
Living in North Vancouver, BC, Shae is an Active Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and the North Shore Artists' Guild, where she has served on the board as Exhibitions Director.
